Frequently Asked Questions
Is fasting required for KUB X-ray?
No, fasting is not required for a plain KUB X-ray. You can eat and drink normally before the test.
What does KUB X-ray detect?
It detects kidney stones (radio-opaque calculi), ureteric calcifications, bladder stones, abnormal gas patterns, and soft tissue shadows in the urinary tract.
Is the radiation exposure high?
KUB X-ray involves a low radiation dose, comparable to a few days of natural background radiation. The diagnostic benefit typically outweighs the minimal risk.
Will contrast dye be used?
A plain KUB does not use contrast. If further evaluation is needed, your doctor may recommend an IV Urogram (IVP) or CT KUB with contrast.
