Methodology
Immunochromatography
This test is a type of rapid diagnostic test (RDT) based on the principle of Immunochromatography, also known as a lateral flow immunoassay. The procedure involves:
* Sample Application: A small amount of the patient's whole blood is added to a test cassette.
* Antigen-Antibody Reaction: The blood travels along a nitrocellulose membrane coated with specific antibodies that are designed to bind to antigens produced by the malaria parasites.
* Detection of Antigens: The test strip contains two specific lines for antigen detection: one for Histidine-Rich Protein II (HRP-2), which is specific to P. falciparum, and another for lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH), which is specific to P. vivax.
* Result Visualization: If the patient's blood contains these specific antigens, a colored line will appear at the corresponding position, indicating a positive result for that species. A control line confirms that the test is working correctly.
Sample Required
WB-EDTA (3ML)
* Preferred Sample: A minimum of 3 mL of whole blood (WB) is collected in a Lavender-top tube containing EDTA as an anticoagulant.
* Processing: The blood sample is used directly for the rapid test without any further processing.
Preparation
* No Fasting Required: This test does not require any specific dietary restrictions. The presence of food or drink does not affect the results. * Patient History: Providing a detailed clinical history... Read more
